Song of the Day: "Too Good"

Fun facts: Drake won 1 Grammy out of his 26 nominations (so far); Rihanna won 8 of her 25 nominations (so far).

Of course they're both doing better than Liza, so I'm not sure whether there's a point here.

For Your Consideration: Master Of None

Outstanding Comedy Series
Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series: "Old People" (Aziz Ansari, Alan Yang, Zoe Jarman, Sarah Peters)
Outstanding Direction for a Comedy Series: Lynn Shelton "Old People"

I loved the composition of this flashback
shot so much that I captured a screenshot
The show is smart, poignant, sentimental, earnest, snarky and possibly the most romantic thing on television these days. Even if it's not on television, per se.

For Your Consideration: Lynn Cohen

Guest Actress in a Comedy Series: Master of None "Old People"

I did not expect Aziz Ansari's Master of None to be one of the most genuine and sentimental shows I've ever seen on television. Part of that charm is that the show's writers present characters and situations that are well within the bounds of realism--there's no "concept" binding things together, just straightforward characters and situations. Okay, maybe the "let's go to a different city for our first date" is a bit of a concept.

Cohen plays this character a bit dry, avoiding grandmother cliches, and ends up giving us something that William H. Macy or Joe Mantegna might have. (Those dudes are good actors, so that means she did good.)

For Your Consideration: "Bitter On Christmas"

Outstanding Music & Lyrics: Julie Klausner and Ted Leo, Difficult People
Like being lonely on Valentines Day
Or dressing up like a slut for Halloween
I do that shit all year round
So don’t micromanage when I can be mean
Difficult People isn't a great show but it has moments: no moment greater than the season's brightest moment in the season finale. "Merry Christmas From The Family" you have company on the favorite holiday songs list. That it could (ought to) garner Ted Leo an Emmy (nomination) is just icing on the cake.

The Saddest, Sweetest Voice Mail

Back in 2012 Clark had some significant breathing issues. He was hospitalized for more than a week in June, and they intubated him to keep him stable.

Well, they tried to. It turns he hated being intubated.

Really hated.

So they put him in a medically-induced coma to keep him from yanking the breathing tubes out of his lungs. That process required a couple of different levels of sedative and, here's the key part: Clark finally came out of the "coma" early on a Saturday morning and has no idea how or why he was in the hospital. Apparently. nurses aren't super helpful if you've tried to fight them off from putting breathing tubes back in your lungs...go figure.

So he called my cell and left this message.

He was calling to see how we were doing. He's confused and in the hospital, but he's worried about us. Also he wasn't sure if we knew he was in the hospital.

Because his mom doesn't fly, she got in the car and started the 3-day drive from Dallas to Portland on Wednesday. When I got to the hospital (after the shift changeover--no visitors in ICU during shift changeover) she was about 2 hours from arrival.

You wake up from a coma to be told your mom's almost there and it's your birthday (the next day was his birthday).
