2014 Singles #10 through #1

#10 Kylie "Into the Blue"
When I got my back up against the wall
Don't need no one to rescue me
I can call her Kylie because we're close like that.

#9 Taylor Swift "Shake It Off"
'Cause the players gonna play, play, play, play, play
And the haters gonna hate, hate, hate, hate, hate
Taylor Swift grasps the axiomatic and sick beats. She also holds a trademark on "this sick beat" but not "those sick beats" or "this ill bass."

#8 Karmin "Try Me On"
Don't think we're together
I change like the weather
This owes its position to a commercial. Probably for a flavored water. Possibly on Hulu+. Can't wait for her next commercial.

#7 Aloe Blacc "The Man"
I believe every lie that I ever told
Paid for every heart that I ever stole
Blacc makes his second top 10 single in as many years, following up his #8 collaboration with Avicii last year.

#6 Tegan and Sara/The Lonely Island "Everything is AWESOME!!!"
I feel more awesome than an awesome opossum
Dip my body in chocolate frostin'
The greatest song about mindless conformity since Hootie and the Blowfish.

#5 Ariana Grande "Break Free"
This is the part when I say I don't want ya
I'm stronger than I've been before
The chorus of this song (Ariana's third and final appearance on my top 50 list) is the sound of my summer. The boys working in the kitchen, trying to get along, taking forever to finish painting. Still not done. Not all of it. That damn door.

#4 Pharrell/Miley Cyrus "Come Get It Bae"
You wanna ride it, my motorcycle
You've got a license, but you got the right to
Pharrell pretty much owned last year's singles list and Miley had 2 of the few slots that weren't his. Combined they pull in another top 5 entry. Eventually I'll admit to loving them both. Dammit.

#3 Meghan Trainor "Lips Are Moving"
I gave you bass, you gave me sweet talk
Saying how I'm your number one
I probably owe it to Trainor to learn how she spells her name if I'm including her twice on my top 50.

#2 Phantogram "Fall In Love"
Fall in me
I'll let you bleed
I fell in love with this song the minute I heard in over a year ago. I Shazammed it a few times because I couldn't remember who it was. I got over that.

#1 Clean Bandit "Rather Be"
If you gave me a chance I would take it
It's a shot in the dark but I'll make it
That back beat: late nights, up to no good. Out with your friends, the optimism of youth. Living while you're young, not a cynical shut-in. God that was fun.
