R.I.P. Paul Walker

Paul Walker for
Davidoff's Cool Water
Paul Walker, actor/model movie star/model/humanitarian, died earlier today in a not-at-all ironic auto accident.

As part of a fund-raiser for victims of the typhoon in the Philippines (pa-HILL-a-PEENs), Walker had been giving celebrity-assisted test drives in a new Porsche GT (or possibly his Porsche).

The vehicle hit a tree.

The vehicle exploded.

Both passengers died.

It's not clear who was driving.

I believe the tree survived.

"Life's too short. And the biggest
 curse is falling in love
with somebody."
Walker starred in several movies I did not ever actually watch all the way through including Into the Deep, Into the Blue, The Blue is the Deep and Varsity Blues/Deeps.

He also made a movie with Leelee Sobieski.

Leelee. Remember her?

Me neither.

Walker won both a Teen Choice Award and an MTV Movie Award. And he had amazingly pretty eyes. Like a young Ed Harris. Or a less young Rich Jones. (What, I have pretty eyes.)

Rest in peace dude.

Song of the Day: "Afterlife"

It's probably in no way interesting to you that it's taken me something like an hour to get around to this post because OMFG what the fuck is wrong with my 5 year old iMac? 6 year old iMac? Shit takes forever. And okay, maybe it's because the hard drive was nearly full so now I'm moving a ton of music to the external hard drive and running Onyx but, long story short (too late), the video I was originally posting for this song wasn't this one so my Coming to America jokes won't be funny.

Not that they were funny before, but at least now I have an excuse.

Here's Arcade Fire. I hope their iMacs are not nearly as slow as mine.

Song of the Day: "Chemical Burns"

Philly band Work Drugs are one of my recent faves and now they're even more faves-ier what with them just flat out buying my affections via free downloads of both this summer's Mavericks album this even newer single.

It's like they knew that I hadn't actually acquired anything of theirs and wanted to rectify that situation.

And they have.

It's a Black Friday miracle, with almost no deaths.

Song of the Day: "Love Me Again"

Derek Hough
Amber Riley
Congratulations again to last night's Mirror Ball trophy winners Amber Riley and Emmy winner Derek Hough.

This song is one I heard on DWTS, but maybe a couple of weeks ago. Like when Elizabeth Berkley got eliminated before Bill Engval or Leah Remini. Holy shit look at me remembering names. (Okay, I did type Lisa Remini at first.)

Here's. um, John Newman.

You know how you know that I'm gay?

Because I've been watching Dancing with the Stars recently.

That's not entirely true. I have also just fucking had it with Two Broke Girls a show that I found marginally charming before I grew tired of Kat Dennings's inability to land a fucking joke without forcing it.

"Forcing it? I once forced it when I was having sex!"

And if I am to return for the next season, this is why.

Congratulations to tonight's winner whomever that might be if Big Gay John doesn't know then this isn't necessarily a spoiler. Also watch the show if it's that important.

Song of the Day: "Ordinary Love"

They struck out with their Oscar nomination and never made it to bat with the Tonys so they're back with more Oscar bait. This track comes from Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom which I'm pretty sure is about a time Winnie Mandela had a flat tire and then her heel broke and she had to walk like 3 miles home... or "freedom."

It's probably not about Nelson Mandela because obviously Nelson Mandela is a terrorist and it is wrong to celebrate terrorists (unlike war criminals and criminals against peace, so go ahead and have your George W. Bush picnic like you planned).

As for the song, zzzzzz. Seriously, I don't understand how U2 garnered their nomination before but Eminem's win (oh yeah, Eminem is an Oscar winner) was totally justified. Suck it Julie Taymor. If this song picks up a nomination I'll be mildly surprised but not stunned. Anticipating nominations from the music branch is difficult although I recall they decided to have 5 nominees no matter what so obviously they don't know what they're doing and will keep changing how they do it until they do. I doubt this song will end up on a 5-disc "essentials" collection of U2.

Song of the Day: "Gypsy"

Stephanie Germanotta Lady Gaga hosted SNL a couple weeks ago and I check it out on the Hulus. I believe she might be a reasonable talented live performer but I watched her writing around on stage in a photo negative of a look Donna Summer might have sported 35 years ago I wondered if she would ever have the courage to tour the way Bruce Springsteen or Bonnie Raitt might. Just playing music and no concerned with external spectacle.

And I say that aware that my last live show was Pet Shop Boys, a show I was excited about specifically because of the spectacle.

I'm not saying she has to, just wondering if she will.

Song of the Day: "Wait for Me"

A King of Leon, Skippy I think
Roscoe from Kings of Leon
I ran across this track from Kings of Leon's recent album Mechanical Bull and was reminded 1) that I haven't heard the album yet and B) that I really like them. Even when they're not doing stadium rock (or possibly especially when they're not doing stadium rock).

Not that their signature sound is stadium rock.

But it's not NOT stadium rock. Is it?

It isn't.

Unless it is.

Regardless, my esteem for them is totally based exclusively on their musical talent. For reals. (As an illustration, I think The Black Keys are a better band and I would not bother to add photos to their songs of the day... well, not of them.)
