Song of the Day: "I Love It"

This song, by Icona Pop and written by Charli XCX, may or may not actually have a parenthetical of I don't care.

Obviously ___ _____ _____.

I mean I do, just not a lot.

Song: "I Love It" or possibly "I Love It (I Don't Care)"

Song of the Day: "Purple Yellow Red & Blue"

There is something satisfyingly trippy about the production of this song, the way it moves from tinny to super bassy around :30. It will either remind you of the first time you took Ecstasy or you have not actually taken Ecstasy.

Just a guess.

Evil Friends, Portugal. The Man's seventh (or possibly eighth) studio album, is released in June. Danger Mouse produced it along with the band (it's difficult to name drop Danger Mouse without marginalizing the band's role in producing the record, you try).

Song of the Day: "Axis"

New Pet Shop Boys from their forth-coming 12th album (if I read their discography correctly) Electric. The accompanying tour comes to Portland on my birthday (for my birthday, naturally). Tickets go on sale tomorrow morning at 10:05 a.m. (because I don't want you getting the seats I want).

Song of the Day: "Sex is in the Heel"

Emmy and Grammy winner Cyndi Lauper received a Tony nomination for music and lyrics of a musical for Kinky Boots. KB leads all productions with 13 nominations, but I don't think that means she's got a lock on a win (Matilda is getting rave reviews, just saying).

But kudos to her, to Jeff Whitty who, while not nominated for best book of a musical, at least can take comfort in knowing the musical he wrote a book for (Bring it On) was nominated for Best Musical. I mean a second one (Avenue Q was the first).

Other things I learned yesterday: dude from Phish is a Tony nominee. Holland Taylor is nominated for Ann (she looks amazingly like Ann Richards when in make-up)--yay! Richard Kind is nominated for something--meh. And they made a ad-black-tation (an adaptation that uses an all-black cast of a previously white show; see also: The Wiz) of The Trip to Bountiful.

That's all I've got.

Song of the Day: "Tube Stops and Lonely Hearts"

I don't recall the exact series of thoughts but at some point yesterday I found myself wondering when I would have coworkers too young to know OJ Simpson and the white Bronco chase. They're coming soon, probably.

Or do 24-year old kids already not know?

Speaking of the 90s, this track from Annie is an ode to rave culture of the early 90s. I'm not sure if "rave culture" is an oxymoron. Lets assume not.

Song of the Day: "Q.U.E.E.N."

Janelle Monáe's follow up to her debut critically acclaimed third release The ArchAndroid and that song with fun. which I could totally not recognize as her no matter how many times I listened to it.

And she brought Erykah Badu along, which I think is cool. Her or Macy Gray, either one works for me. Or Nona Hendryx or Cyndi Lauper.
