Song of the Day: "On the Outskirts of Town"

Let's continue a string of country music, staying in the authentic end of the pool. Here's the Time Jumpers, hot off their Grammy nomination (slash loss to Little Big Town who, as I type this, think might just be tomorrow's song of the day... take that neo-soul).

Song of the Day: "Southern Comfort Zone"

Brad Paisley, sigh, you're so much better than this. This song is sooo much better than Tim's or Kenny's and yet I feel like you're pandering.

Still, you make all this sound so effortless.

And so great.

There's a fantastic quality to the driving rhythm that had me cynically sure that whoever produced "Viva La Vida" handled the production here. I am delighted to find out Paisley produced this album, and that it's his first time handling that responsibility for himself.

I love the lyric about kissing a west coast girl underneath the northern lights and I hope he and Kimberly have a Clint & Lisa-esque marriage (or Mark & Pam!!!), but Kimberly's got to be pushing 40 by now, so maybe he'll trade her in for someone from a CW show soon.

Song of the Day: "I'm Just Your Woman"

Let's flush the in-authenticity of Kenny and Tim, and get back to Erica Sunshine Lee.

The first time I've heard her sound earnest and I'm loving it.

Did I command you to go see her a few weeks ago? And did you?

I'll take Things That Are Awesome for $1,000 Alex

"Bad Dog" by Richard Jackson at
Orange County Museum of Art via Dr. Marty Becker
What's not to love about this new installation?

Dr. Becker asks if it's art. I say if it's a creative expression made without regard to commerce, it's art.

If Jenkins was commissioned to create an installation and came up with this to match some predetermined specification (like budget or medium or size) it's design.

Either way it's totally awesome. I wonder if I can create something like this for my shed.

Song of the Day: "One of Those Nights"

Speaking of inauthentic country music, here's Tim McGraw.

It's a behind-the-scenes look at of the making of a (non-existent) video. Here's what's missing: you don't see the dude who tapes down his hats so as not to expose his complete lack of hair; you don't see the 36 minutes of Tim in the make-up chair getting concealer and moisturizer slathered the fuck all over his face; and you don't see the walking corpse of Faith Hill (I guess Shania is anorexic, because Faith does everything Shania does).

Still, it's one notch better than Kenny. Maybe Kenny needs to spend more time with the walking corpse of Faith Hill. Maybe they can shop for bandannas: to drape over her skeletal remains and over Kenny's also-bald head.

Dear Tim, try a Tom Petty cover, but I'll settle for a good Eagles cover.

Even a criminal against peace needs a hobby

I guess.

George W. Bush has been painting.

Details from Colbert.

Song of the Day: "Pirate Flag"

Sigh.

SIGH!

So many ways to go with this. Pirate Fag. Butt Pirate Flag. Or plain old Kenny Chesney*.

I seldom use the word inauthentic about music, but OMFG can you hear any of what he's singing about in his voice?

Me neither.

Dear Kenny, learn to fake it better. Or just change the pronouns. You'll feel so much better when you do and avoid a nasty Randy Travis-like series of legal woes.

Changes to EGOT standings after last night's Grammy awards

I'm pretty sure these are the only current show business award winners of something aside from a Grammy that expands their EGOT credentials with their first-time Grammy.

  • Emmy winner Jimmy Fallon adds a Grammy.
  • Tony winner Steve Kazee adds a Grammy.
I will update if I learn of others.

Song of the Day: "Out of My League"

More Fitz.

More Tantrums.

Even more "and the" as you might have expected.

A new album, it's coming soon.

Notes on Looper

Looper didn't suck.

Song of the Day: "Symptoms"

Becky was angry (grrrr) that I left Atlas Genius off my singles list. I just shrugged.

I just Atlas Shrugged.
