R.I.P. Loleatta Holloway

She brought a gospel music voice to dance music, and she's an interesting case study in the importance of clearing all samples before you release a song (details here).

Her sampled voice made Black Box's "Ride on Time" the #1 song of 1990 in the UK.


The same song of hers was sampled for the Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch hit "Good Vibrations" and if you think I'm including this only because a young and buff Mark Wahlberg spends most of the video shirtless, then you're pretty AND smart.


And I leave y'all with one of the strangest musical convergences in my little musical world. Loleatta covering The Style Council's "Shout to the Top" with Fire Island (the band, not the actual island).
