Notes on Lars and the Real Girl
About 18 months after its theatrical release, I finally get around to watching it on DVD.
Adorable.
A gentle, compelling little story, exceptionally well acted (Ryan Gosling and Patricia Clarkson continue to impress, Paul Schneider and Emily Mortimer are also strong, but there's no false performance in the movie) and very ably directed by Craig Gillespie. The screenplay, an Oscar nominee, by Nancy Oliver, is a solid foundation for them all.
It's a near perfect little indie--everything Juno was supposed to be but wasn't quite for me.

Notes on Adventureland
A small, sweet movie, but ultimately lacking in many laugh-out-loud moments, or a deep emotional connection with me. Jessie Eisenberg is a compelling young actor, and I can't decide on Kristen Stewart. But if you're going to use wonderful actresses like Kristen Wiig and Wendie Malick, PLEASE give them more to do than you have here.
