Blog comment of the day

Fun fact: jive and jibe are different words that mean different things and can not be used interchangeably.

Seen here.

I have the ears of an annoying teen!

So suck it, um, old peeps.

Try it yourself.

A follow-up note to Piyush Jindal

These states have active volcanoes that need monitoring: Alaska, California, Hawaii, Oregon, and Washington.

Please shut the fuck up.

This week's Achewood

Is hysterical.

Sam Adams's Netflix queue

Since Sam is staying home most nights, here's a glimpse inside his Netflix queue. Suggested additions welcome in the comments (and thanks to Leland for many great ideas).

1. Love and Death on Long Island
2. Gods and Monsters
3. Death in Venice
4. White Squall (it's a 2 hour A&F ad)
5. All About Eve (he's maudlin and full of self-pity you know)
6. The Candidate
7. Lolita (the James Mason version)
8. A Star is Born (the Judy Garland version, he needs a good cry)
9. The Sound of Music (for after the cry)
10. The Beach (I hear he's a big Leonardo DiCaprio fan)

Looking up

Above, Comet Lulin, visible from Earth tonight if you live away from city lights.

Below, The Eye of God (the Helix Nebula) courtesy of the Hubble Telescope.

A note to Piyush Jindal on volcanoes

Don't knock volcano monitoring if your state doesn't have active volcanoes.

You don't see the Pacific Northwest pooh-poohing the need for monitoring hurricanes.

Weird

My entries aren't visible when you land on my page, but are coming up one at a time if you click on the title. Adding this to see if it "fixes" the situation.

Also "weird" another example of "'i' before 'e' except after 'c'" being wrong. It's like saying "2 + 2 = 4, except 2 + 32 = 38" or something... just an anti-English rant.

Chad Vader re-enacts the Oscar nominees

Lyric of the day

But if you are feeling sinister
Go off and see the minister
He'll try in vain to take away
The pain of being a hopeless unbeliever

19 out of 24 on Oscar night

Take that Nate Silver. I correctly predicted (or guessed) every category except lead actor (although when Mickey Rourke showed up with an open collar, I was rooting for him to lose), foreign language film, live action short, animated short, and sound mixing.

I tied with a co-worker and then LOST on the tie-breaker question (when would the show end) which totally sucks.

It is worth noting that by award time I had seen (in no particular order): Slumdog Millionaire, Wall-E, Dark Knight, Doubt, Frost/Nixon, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Milk, The Reader, In Bruges, Rachel Getting Married, Iron Man, The Visitor, The Wrestler, and Tropic Thunder. This is a notable improvement over recent years when I'd seen, like 2 movies in the theaters before Oscar time.

Abu Ghraib prison by way of Ikea

CNN.com has an article about how Abu Ghraib has been refurbished into a humane prison (complete with water fountains). Article here.

The look is another sad by-product of the devastation that is "don't ask, don't tell." No out and proud gay man would let this look happen.
