Roman Polanski arrested in Switzerland

US officials arrested Polanski when he went to Switzerland to accept an award. He has been a fugitive from US authorities since 1978:
Mr. Polanski, 76, was convicted that year in a California court of unlawful sex with a 13-year-old girl whom he had lured to the home of Jack Nicholson and drugged. Faced with a prison term, he fled the United States just before his sentencing.

Samantha Geimer, the girl with whom Mr. Polanski had sex, has since publicly forgiven him.

Because there is no statute of limitation for "flight," this has haunted him for over 30 years. And I don't mean to minimize the crimes of fleeing conviction, rape and/or otherwise taking an advantage of a 13-year old girl. Being a celebrity should not insulate him. Although his Oscar win for The Pianist suggests that Hollywood isn't holding it against him. If one of the Law & Order shows hasn't ripped this from the headlines yet, expect it very soon.

Details on the surprising story are here.
